Out of her studio in Brooklyn, designer Sarah Cihat lovingly crafts the pieces that make up her Rehabilitated Dishware collection, a refreshing comment on our deeply rooted throw-away culture. The project started as part her thesis while at Parson’s School of Design and has since been widely published and exhibited.
Cihat scours second hand stores and and department store reject piles to find dishware that is then reglazed and refired. Designs are themed, so anyone with a creative sense can create their own set of dishes. You can go somewhat logical, like Dandy-Pinup-Rockstar or Moose-Horse-Antelope, or a bit more unexpected, along the lines of Daggered Heart-Roses-Abraham Lincoln or Flamingo-Moonman-Mixtape. Either way, you’ll have something to talk about with dinner guests, there’s nothing like breaking up that uncomfortable silence with a “So, how’s that pinup girl working for your potatoes?”
Get some on the site or find a store nearby. Custom orders can be made, in case you just must have, say, Moby Dick, a sparrow, or a portrait of yourself on your dishware.
