Tax day! I’m so happy they are filed and ready, and I am getting a refund! For some reason, I introduced my boss to the idea of submitting our best work to some design competitions, something that my job has never done before. Even though I continue to doubt the merits of all these competitions, I do think it’s good for employee moral. Showing our designers that we value their work is a matter that should not be undervalued. I spent most of my day preparing everything to send out the package with out entries. Who puts a competition deadline on tax day anyways?
I had planned to go to the gym after work, but had forgotten that M and I had promised to attend a concert with one of M’s acquaintances’ boyfriend on the drums. I met up with him at a Global Green party at Apotheke, an awesome little speakeasy cocktail lounge in China Town. I’m not sure if I would have made it there without the help of my iPhone map, because there was no sign outside (how very hip), and the block was probably the most obscure alley in China Town. It felt like a movie set, and someone said there had once been some type of gang showdown there in the past, resulting in massive casualties. Inside, it was a whole different world. The back of the bar did justice to the name, with displays of medicine bottles, vials, and other curiosities. The cocktails were delicious and I definitely want to come back to sample some more.
Before heading to the concert, we had a drink at the relatively newly opened Thompson LES, a hotel with a low-key hotel bar. There was white carpet in the lounge area, a terrible design choice. It’s mindboggling how something like that can seem like a good choice to a designer, the place has not yet been open for six months and the white carpet was gross.
The concert was great, white-boy soul by a songwriter doing his first actual performance as front-man. Why do the talented hide in the shadows? M had taken the car in and found a choice parking spot right outside the bar, so after the concert we felt very VIP, walking out the door, getting into our primely parked car, and driving home.
