The Story of Cosmetics: Myths & Facts

Would you fly an airline that only inspects 20% of their planes? Probably not. But did you know that less than 20% of all chemicals in cosmetics have been assessed for safety? The average U.S. woman uses 12 personal care products every day (men use 6, on average), each of them contains a dozen or more chemicals. Without the proper testing procedures in place, there is simply no way of knowing what this daily exposure does to our systems. cont.

Farmers Markets on Wheels

Farmers Markets on Wheels

Living in New York City, one can easily get spoiled with having access to a slew of Farmers Markets offering fresh produce any day of the week. In other parts of the country (or this city for that matter), good organic food is not so easy to come by. To tackle the issue of availability, mobile Farmers Markets have started popping up all over the country. To me, this is a brilliant solution to a few different problems. cont.

Make Responsible AND Healthy Seafood Choices: A Visual Guide

I’ve been very happy to see friends consult Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Sustainable Seafood Guides when making choices at restaurants. The oceans are severely at risk and it’s very important that we all make the most environmentally conscious and sustainable choices possible. However, toxin levels are also something we should all be concerned about, which usually involves calling upon a different guide. cont.

Futurenatural: Organic Beauty

It always amazes me when people who are otherwise vigilant about their health — eating well, exercising, getting enough sleep — are completely clueless about the detrimental effects of chemicals in beauty products. We care so much about what we put in our bodies – we should also care what we put on it! Enter Futurenatural, hailed as a new kind of “Sephora” for the conscious set — an online store that aims to “provide people of all ages, gender and race with cont.

Food Rules: Answering the Question “What Should I eat?”

Whenever I get up on my soapbox and start talking to my friends and family about the pitiful state of our food system, the one thing they always ask me is “so what should I eat then?” This is not an easy one to answer since something bad can be said about virtually anything we stick out forks into. cont.

Kahina Giving Beauty

The beauty ritual is something inherently connective; women all over the world bond over creams, lotions and potions. Recently, at an organic trunkshow, I met Katharine L’Heureux, whose company Kahina Giving Beauty is all about “women helping women through shared beauty rituals.” 25% of profits are donated to the women in Morocco who harvest the argan oil that is the core ingredient of all the products. cont.

Suki — 100% pure, natural & honest beauty.

Suki Kramer’s skin care company was born out of her own need for high quality treatments suitable for her sensitive complexion, prone to allergic reactions and severe eczema. She had tried countless remedies to no avail, the majority of products either did nothing or worsened her condition. This problem grew into a desire to make a difference, and an urge to bring to market a line of skin care products that were truly 100% pure, 100% natural and 100% honest.  cont.

Fresh

When we look back at this time a half century from now, how will we feel about our actions (or inactions)? Ana Sofia Joanes, director of the documentary Fresh, compares it to living in Germany during Nazi times, watching atrocities unravel while quietly standing by, doing nothing to fight for what’s right. cont.

CSA: Harvest Party

The first great thing about being part of a CSA is knowing exactly where your food is coming from, and actually being able to visit your future salad while it is still growing in the field. It’s been nearly four months since I embarked on this culinary journey, and it has been something of an adventure. cont.

Cheese, I don’t need you.

Cheese, I don’t need you.

Cheese, I don’t need you.

On a usual Friday night after work, I would stop by Murray’s Cheese in Grand Central Station, pick up a few different wedges and a baguette at the bread shop. A cheese platter and red wine often became dinner that night. Then, I began to feel a bit cheesed out, but still kept doing my Friday ritual, because it seemed like a nice habit. The relationship was starting to get a bit one-sided, Cheese no longer gave me the satisfaction it used to. So, I decided it was time to break up. cont.

CSA: The First Month

I have lettuce anxiety. It started the first week, with one or two huge heads, I can’t even remember at this point. Last week, there were three enormous ones, in addition to three other giant bunches of green. I have eaten lettuce for breakfast, lunch, dinner for weeks. The stress of never knowing when it might just wilt is at times unbearable. But… I feel beyond great. cont.

90 Days of Organic Raw Vegan-ness: week 13

I am writing the last week of our raw organic vegan-ness diet a few weeks after we finished. In a way this allows me to reflect upon the entire experience as a whole and include further insight on coming off the diet which I feel everyone should know after completing such a long journey. Just as there were benefits and drawbacks of the raw diet, coming off it had many of it’s own. cont.

Two more weeks. That’s what I kept thinking about week 12. I was longing for another vegan burrito on day 90 to celebrate. Luckily, my good friend Deniz came down from Montreal to help out with some much needed IT work, and also brought some fresh ideas to our recipe list. For some reason, our recipes became stagnant when we sat on an idea for a long period of time. cont.

90 Days of Organic Raw Vegan-ness: week 11

This week we got the first box of produce from our new CSA, J.R. Organics. Although we received a mid-week email update of all the items that would be in our weekly box it was a bit difficult to plan our recipes based on that information. We needed to know amounts as well. For example, if carrots are said to be in the box, that’s great, but if you are going to make a hefty carrot salad for the week you need a hefty amount of carrots. cont.

90 Days of Organic Raw Vegan-ness: week 10

The general theme for week 10 was definitely You’ve got to shop around. In my short time residing in Southern California I have been told at least once a month, “how lucky I am to live here” since California has such an abundance of farms, fresh food and organic options to choose from. I can tell you, I am thankful for the reminders. It is true, us Californians have it good when it comes to organics and produce. cont.

CSA: Foraging at Paisley Farm

One of the added benefits of joining a CSA is the ability to pay a visit to the farm where your food will be grown. Mine, Paisley Farm in Tivoli, NY, just decided to start a CSA this year. To introduce their members to the farm, the farmers, the land and each other they decided to organize a series of foraging excursions. cont.
