Possibly the hardest item of clothing for devoted vegans to find is outerwear. We rarely think about the fact the most winter coats contain some form of animal product, be it leather, fur, or even wool. Leanne Mai-ly Hilgart, designer of Chicago-based “activist fashion label” Vaute Couture, spent eight months doing textile research and development in order to bring us the handsome, well-tailored line presented at The GreenShows during New York Fashion Week. cont.
NYFW: Ekovaruhuset / House of Organic
On the final day of The GreenShows during New York Fashion Week, Ekovaruhuset / House of Organic showed their new collections. It is technically Fall/Winter, but the House of Organic does not really depend on the seasons the way the big fashion houses do; they don’t even depend on trends. The timeless, ethereal, fair made creations are as timeless as they are beautiful. cont.
Recycled Couture at NY Fashion Week
It’s the time of teetering heels again. Uncomfortable, spectacular footwear takes over the streets as the Bryant Park tents fill with fashion’s A-listers for the last time. Meanwhile The GreenShows, this year housed at 311 E 11: Village Green, turns the spotlight to sustainably inclined designers. Opening night Gary Harvey, former Creative Director of Levi Strauss, sent spectacular recycled couture creations down the runway. cont.
Found Textiles and Biodiversity
The threads of cultural identity seem to find us no matter how far away from home we may wander, and though it may not be particularly fashionable to wear your place of origin on your sleeve, this might be finally changing with an upsurge in recycled textile and ethnic embroidery in eco fashion collections. A new wave of resourceful designers are re-invigorating native textiles by fashioning them into wearable and culturally chic garments. cont.
Environment by Heather Heron
No matter how much we enjoy living in a winter wonderland, the one thing everyone residing in northerly climates does as the cold sets in is California-dream ourselves away to carefree days spent on warm sunny beaches. Heather Heron’s new collection for Environment Furniture celebrates the worry-free art of living minimally, but full of spirit and a sense of adventure. cont.
Thieves
Sonja den Elzen wants to provide the means for us to steal back our sense of self and express our individuality through style, which is why she chose to name her line Thieves. Ethically committed to sustainability, Thieves uses eco friendly fabrics and organic textures, while masterfully integrating draping and tailoring with a very designed aesthetic. cont.
The Uniform Project
Sometimes, getting dressed in the morning seems like way too much work. I know I have at times wished I could just wear a lab coat or something to work and not have to worry about matching colors in the early morning hours. With The Uniform Project, Sheena Matheiken decided to show us all that it is possible to wear the same thing, yet reinvent your look every day. Starting in May 2009, she pledged to wear the same black dress for one year as an exercise in sustainable fashion. cont.
NY Fashion Week: The GreenShows
For two days, during the height of New York Fashion week, The King of Greene Street space in SoHo was taken over by ecologically conscious fashion. The GreenShows featured fashion shows by seven top eco fashion lines, and were attended by a good mix of greenies, fashionistas and editors. cont.
Hiphonest
With fashion week season now underway in cosmopolitan capitals globally, there is no doubt that the careful scrutiny of the latest style trends and designer collections will be the preoccupation of hipsters everywhere. The good news is that there are some major inroads being made in sustainable fashion, specifically in terms of materials, sourcing, and media attention. cont.
Recycling: Don’t forget about clothing.
Overall, clothing is cheaper today that it has ever before been. Blame the Walmart effect. Items like T-shirts sometimes sell for just a few dollars at big box stores, inevitably making them disposable, throwaway items. It’s sometimes cheaper to buy new clothes than to properly care for the ones you have. The Fiber Economics Bureau reported that the average American throws out about 68 pounds of textiles per year. cont.
Heartfelt
Jill Harrop is on a quest to revise the way we consume and to adjust our perception of how to dress consciously. Her Heartfelt line of relaxed separates is designed for effortless living and aims to create an aesthetic that rises above all trends. Heartfelt’s commitment to quality and craftsmanship is a counter-reaction to the current driving force of changing fashion trends and the overproduction of clothing. cont.
reMade USA
The last thing the world needs is more stuff, right? The amount of clothing that gets thrown into landfills each year is staggering, yet we keep producing more and more of it, replacing old with new at an accelerating pace. Shannon South of reMade USA has figured out a way to slow down this vicious cycle by upcycling used materials to make one-of-a-kind bags. cont.
The Ethical Fashion Forum
If you are currently experiencing ‘green is the new black’ fashion fatigue, it might be because the latest interpretations of sustainable design are a bit up in the air as green goods continue to go mainstream alongside ever savvier marketing strategies. This past year has seen significant developments on the fashion frontier as the industry broadens its scope of just how chic eco textiles and sustainable style can be. cont.
olsen Haus: Vegan Shoes
Yes, vegan shoes. Sounds strange, I know, but cruelty-free shoes should have a prominent place in any eco-fashionista’s closet. Working from a viewpoint off universal truth, respect for all beings and with a dedication to the expression of truth in the material world, olsen Haus creates good looking footwear that keep your conscience clear. cont.
Wednesday, May 13
Felt like I really had a bad hair day today, and since I haven’t cut it in months and months, I probably was not just imagining it. My ends are dry, split and sad, it’s not a pretty picture at all. I really need to make that appointment with a hairdresser soon. But, it’s so hard, I haven’t found one here that I’ve made mine yet, and hair is such a personal thing. I need to commit and do it soon. cont.
Fashion & Identity
I love clothing, in every way shape and form. It’s fascinating how what you choose to wear on a particular day can determine your whole persona; the way you see the world and the way the world sees you. This may seem shallow, but is nevertheless true. We are inherently trained to judge by appearances, it is a trait that carries through from our hunter-gatherer days when the ability to make snap-judgements could mean life or death. cont.
