No matter how much we enjoy living in a winter wonderland, the one thing everyone residing in northerly climates does as the cold sets in is California-dream ourselves away to carefree days spent on warm sunny beaches. Heather Heron’s new collection for Environment Furniture celebrates the worry-free art of living minimally, but full of spirit and a sense of adventure.

Known for her chic, modern and sustainable pieces, Heather Heron‘s designs bridge luxury and responsibility. “We are excited to have found a design partner and friend who shares the Environment values, aesthetic and passion for found materials,” says Davide Berruto, CEO of Environment Furniture. “Heather’s positive energy and talent are inspiring.”

“My inspiration is rooted in creating beauty from limited resources, I feel that this has come full circle to being a very modern way of life and what inspires my designs,” says Heron.

Organic hemp textiles have become something of a signature for Heron: “My love affair with hemp is what drew me to using Reclaimed Vintage U.S. Military textiles. The U.S. Government formed the War Hemp Industries Department to subsidize hemp cultivation and grew about a million acres of hemp as part of that program. Many people do not know that if you were a farmer in America and you didn’t grow hemp you would be jailed or kicked out of the country as a non patriot.”

Organic hemp textiles are deeply rooted in American tradition and are a favorite of Heron's.

Organically tanned leather, surplus Japanese denim, and Japanese antique textiles are also a big part of the collection. “Ten years ago while traveling in Japan, I became obsessed with these beautiful textiles called Boro which are indigo dyed hemp that has been mended and repaired… the most stunning recycling tradition i had ever seen,” says Heron.

All the materials were hand selected and crafted into the final pieces by skilled artisans in California. A pioneer of sustainable design, Environment Furniture is no stranger to using reclaimed fabric, in fact, they have been using some of these very same materials for their sofas and chairs for quite some time.

Says Heron: “It was a dream come true to work with Environment Furniture. Our shared vision of independently designing with reclaimed military, our beliefs and intentions for design were perfectly aligned.”

It seems to me, this collection could be the beginning of a beautiful collaborative journey into sustainable design.

The collection is available at Heather Heron’s online store, at Environment Furniture’s website as well as in their NYC, LA, Atlanta and Costa Mesa showrooms.
